Some systematic reviews reported NaF varnish can be applied topically two to four times a year. Is there any update about frequency of 2% NaF gel or varnish to apply in 6 years-old children? Can you share your knowledge please? Thanks!
I found the journal "Systematic Review of Controlled Trials on the Effectiveness of Fluoride Gels for the Prevention of Dental Caries in Children Journal of Dental Education ■ Volume 67, Number 4". I can not find the recent research.
I dont know anything about applying gel. I do know that the following protocol results in no plagues, with minimal daily brushing:
From fourth month of pregnancy: 1 mg/day Zymafluor,
Newborn to 2 years of age, 0.25 mg/day Zymafluor
Between 2 and 4 years of age, 0.5 mg/day Zymafluor
Between 4 and 12 years of age: 1 mg/day Zymafluor
Frequency of topical application of NaF varnish or APF gel depends on child caries risk. At higher risk caries, application every 3 months is recommended. Other wise, twice a year. Comparing the effectiveness of varnish and gel in reducing caries is inconclusive. For young children, varnish application is preferable than gel because the risk of toxicity through swallowing gel remnants.
