From the IS literature I've looked at, there needs to be a more holistic approach that includes investigating the human element and organisational environment/architecture for design requirements, under lying theory and to enable positive 'emergent' behaviour from all parts working together well.

In terms of the research front, the hottest area by far is business analytics. The immediately past hot area is healthcare IS. If you want to get the latest calls, probably the best area is to subscribe to the AIS list serve. I don't think anyone is going to have a ready list of CFPs.
I agree with Michael. Business analytics is the emphasis right now in every journal. Look at also recent editor's comments of MISQ on the direction the field wants to go - mainly more inclusion of design science research.
Actually it may very well be that we currently are heading towards *saturation* when it comes to the *populist* and *fashionable* topics mentioned (e.g. Business Analytic s and Design Science). Why am I saying that - well - *if* you actually read many of the articles in these subjects - it is *in my view* quite obvious that the quality of their content is becoming more and more *questionable* and superficial - which is not strange considering the (mainly) US practices and requirements for getting a tenure. In previous years this population of *Lemmings* have resulted in reactions due to the lack of *differentiation* - but unfortunately (again in my opinion) - not due to quality concerns. Populist research in Business Analytic s may very well go the same route as (for example) the recently popular research in TAM... As for *design Science* this is something that politically has been invested heavily in by some leading academics. So a revolution is only a generation away...
This list is ofcourse of some use to US based IS oriented academics (for the purpose of getting a tenure). If we however would discuss interesting research in our area - the list is perhaps quite unhelpful. As in my own case the listed journals are not publishing many interesting articles at all. In fact, most of the time when I myself find interesting academic articles they are usually in publications not even on the MISQ list. So perhaps the MISQ list could be seen as the opposite of what it (probably) is intended to be. In other words - would I like to know what is interesting in my area (I would suggest that IS is my main area of interest) - then the listed journals are to be ignored. In fact, for the last ten years I might have found less than a handful of articles in MISQ which I have experienced as *good academic research* that is of interest to me. Personally I find even many of the papers presented in for example IFIP conferences as being much more relevant and of significance. But I guess while they may be more interesting - there is less prestige in that kind of publications.
There are number of conferences and journals under Association of Information System (AIS) where once can submit one's work for publication and interact with researchers / practitioners in the IS domain.
It might be useful to look at some of the recent articles ( survey the issues in the past year at least) published in top IS journals (ie MIQ Quarterly and other eg Information Systems Research etc). That will give you a feeling of the recent arguments in the field as well as the current gaps or calls for future research.
I think we should remember that there are two related research worlds where world class IS research is discussed and published. One is represented by the AIS related conferences and journals and the other is represented by the IFIP world of conferences. Over more than forty years the IFIP WG 8 has a number of related conferences where great IS research has been discussed and published - in many cases years ahead of what is to be found in the AIS related and assumed to be *top-journals*. Some examples of excellence can be found in groups such as IFIP WG 8.2 [Information Systems Research]; IFIP WG 8.6 [Transfer and Diffusion of IT]; IFIP WG 8.3 [Decision Support Systems]; but there are a few more and certainly worth keeping informed about.
