I know US DOT and Federal Highway Administration has historic datasets on vehicles by state, but the breakdowns seem a bit aggregated; no breakdowns for motorcycles, buses, ships, trains, light/medium duty, etc. - just private + commercial and public. I will have to start a giant merge project from separate files, but wondering if there was something already available somewhere?

Shouldn't the Departments of Revenue or states in the U.S. have their own records of how many vehicles are running on their state roads? I know they have zip level info on make and model of cars.
