We had several leaders in the previous century whom we inspire a lot by their qualities ! Can you name some names of Leaders in this century and the reason why we need to follow them ?
Definitely it is not a research-related question my dear friend ! Of course, I do understand the difference between "Quora" and "RG" .I believe RG is a forum to discuss things which anybody can who are not aware about ! Atleast we have people from Department of History & Linguistics who can share their views !
Interesting question. Have you considered that the leaders from history may not have been held in the same light in their time as they are now? Does history play a role in the way we view leaders? If so, determining this century's leaders of such esteem may be difficult at this point in time.
In the process of unmasking your question, my mind is rather redirected to Time and Factor;
HIS-TO-TELL of HIS-TO-RE - LATE
Meaning looking forward, to value.
It will be unkind to assume that leaders created by MEDIA PERFOMANCE today with little privacy SHOULD BE COMPARED with and/or to “KENNEDY” and the likes for example (WHO HIS DISABILITY WAS HIDDEN); Will that happen today; NO.
Therefore, most leaders today will be Heroes and Master Class in 20 years’ time. (Declaration of Quality is time based.)
So far NO. It will be interesting to see if the world can generate new leaders in the age of big and super powerful corporations. I think the next outstanding leader will be the one who brings the big corporations into line and take the public and the masses forward. So far, they (leaders to be) are all pretty much puppets of the system and therefore we have no outstanding real leaders or leadership. In fact, the world has become a bit of a headless chicken in a swamp, and we are going backward (declining) in many areas such as freedom, ethics and socially. We have to look back to find inspirations.
I agree with the general theme of the responses. A socially different time would produce socially different leaders, and the influence of social media and global communication. It would be unfair to compare a leader such as Kennedy to a present day leader, not only because of the challenges they faced but also in the way they are portrayed. Many students are taught about Kennedy as a central figure in historically important world events him. Is this the reason he stands out as a leader? or was it solely the basis of his leadership.
I agree with all those who can't find any leader today. Most politicians once elected act like trapeze artists trying to avoid falling off the thin rope, no matter what they promised before election. In order to find someone who is worth following one has to go elsewhere. I give an example.
I watch a unique show (Pame Paketo on the Greek AlphaTV) where people who lost touch with relatives through adoption or else are reconnected with lost relatives. Sometimes mothers lose babies through illegal adoption only to see their only child after 50-60 years of suffering due to the loss. Life has been very cruel to them. One can't believe what has happened to them!
When someone is under stress one develops amazing powers to survive. Such people are usually poor in money but rich in resourcefulness. I find, these are REAL people. Some turn into God who "sends" them amazing dreams that turn real soon enough. Or others have dreams that are unclear, but something turns up again. Or after a lot of suffering, there is light in the tunnel by some happening. These people, I find, are really worth following, are today's leaders for me.
I put a step completely out of my scope of competency...
But I think we could try to elaborate this question by dividing it in three part:
1/ Is there any Scientific leadership figure this century;
2/ Is there any Political leadership figure this century;
3/ Is there any cultural leadership figure this century.
First of all, yes, of course, time will tell, and maybe in one short century away we will look blind to something/someone the was to close to us to being able to accommodate.
But nevertheless this is an interesting question to try to solve it in the present.
For the Scientific leadership there is probably seeds of future greatness, in Physics of the unified theory, or in medicine, but for me it's still hard to distinguish a new Einstein. The new generation of Exascale (and 1000 x more Zetascale) supercomputer will surely revolutionize the way we are doing science, but that gives me no clue on who will emerge as a/the scientific leader of the century, except that mastering a field of research and being able to exploit these new tools could bring a decisive competitive edge.
For the Political leadership, probably the initial meaning of your question, I also agree that this is still difficult to distinguish one yet. For the metric of this leadership would be to embrace the global challenge we are facing today, Climate Change, dramatic loss of biodiversity, but also more societal challenge, such as how to take the better of a technological world gone fully global, while addressing the still existing at a large extent poverty issue, using information technology to developing a sens of brotherhood and not a feeling of Big-Brotherhood.
That brings me to my last chapter, with regard to cultural leader. Here I also still don't a face emerging, but I could draw a job description: someone who can understand the scientific chalenges of our century, including the ethical ones, but also the politic one, with the opposite forces that bring us closer and closer, melting us all, and the one that fight to keep our differentiate identity within it (with the worst scheme of implementation possible to find into each of them). The one, (the she ?), must probably the ones, who can embrace this maelstrom and built something out of it that could make sense, put people in action, locally and globally, for me they would qualify as leader that it could make sense to follow...
