Upvote button signifies apt/correct/potential answer by a researcher ! Do we really need a downvote button in a community of participative and intelligent people ?
An up-vote button does signify by its presence a possibility of a down vote button. Just as the Roman pollice verso or verso pollice "with a turned thumb"of gladiatorial combat is somewhat murky and is still debated by scholars, the "Like"and Upvote buttons are as well. The solution might be multiple choice, as Facebook has done. How about to start: Up-vote and Let's Discuss?
Dear Rose M. Richardson Sir, when there is room for everybody to discuss things frankly, why do you need downvote button to bring an ill feeling to the researcher who has discussed what they've felt ? I may be ignorant
I need to explain a little more, since I was in a bit of a hurry earlier.
A good discussion, even if participants don't agree on something should not have people to part with wounds. I am not happy with the downvote button and have never used it! So my suggestion: we can have the upvote still, and also a button to say "hey we need to talk more" or some variation of that. I hate to discourage someone posting thoughts on subjects. The current "downvote" button is silly, and is also anonymous which would not help anyone. The polite thing would be to point out the part where you do not agree and the reason why and ask for clarification in case you didn't understand the contribution. I guess this was what I was thinking when I suggested the "Let's Discuss" or maybe a "Please Explain" for example rather than the Downvote button. (Clarification at work!) Slamming someone for "Poor Content" as the downvote button says anonymously is not only discouraging but potentially bullying.
That is fine Dr. Ananth, since I am sure we will not be able to change the downvote by our few numbers in any event. Perhaps this discussion will serve to caution people not to "downvote" too hastily until they ask the person for more discussion on the topic!
I exactly don't know who is doing this illiteracy, by downvoting the answers and the questions. Perhaps this is their habit from birth. They should to be blocked permanently from RESEARCHGATE. They actually don't know anything of science, they are really just at here to spoil the environment of this RG website. And one more strict order to the down-voters from me that, if you want to down vote any contribution of anybody, you have to give the reason for which you see that thing is insignificant. Otherwise be sure that, anonymous down voting makes you silly & insignificant to other people.
