It is claimed everywhere that PDMS can be bonded with silica-based materials, such as glass, quartz, and PDMS. I have successfully done PDMS-glass bonding with the following steps:
1. Clean glass with Piranha and PDMS with acetone/IPA
2. Oxygen Plasma for 2min (50W)
3. Bond and cure for 15min at 90C oven
However, with the same recipe, I cannot bond PDMS with quartz. I believe the only difference is that quartz is 99% SiO2 while glass is less pure.
Is there any trick on bonding PDMS with quartz chip?
Hi Yinxiao Li , the chemical and physical affinity is very important perhaps impurities glass are those which are helping to create bonds with PDMS due to many factors, one of the principal could be the charge of the molecule or it can also be due to their ionic radius, with respect to SiO2 could be that is not complying with the above, another possibility is that the PDMS contains a certain amount of Si in their chemical estructra and reaches a saturation point that you can not accept more ions of this type and can not be link ... if you have more information about how to perform the synthesis would be much help to give a better conclusion ... have a nice day !!!
Your question is not fully comprehensive. I guess you talk about fused silica or fused quartz, most likely optical polished with low amount of surface OH. If you talk about glass there are also multiple possibilities
What do you mean with bonding and curing? Your question deals with the adhesion of the polymer onto your surface which is also depending on the roughness (additionally to the OH groups H-bridges ).
if you want to bond forming a SiOSi bond you can start using silane (H, OH, or OR).
