My lab has plans to start using the IntelliCage (http://www.tse-systems.com/products/behavior/intellicage/index.htm) for behavioral testing. In order to best utilize the IntelliCage's high throughput capabilities, we'd optimally like to test 10-12 mice at a time, which would require combining cages of adult mice. I've read that combining adult females is generally not an issue, but obviously combining adult males can lead to fighting. Additionally, some of our mouse strains have the C57BL/6J background and will be more aggressive. I was wondering if anyone has combined cages of adult mice (specifically males) and whether you have any advice on how to combine the cages in a way that reduces the probability of fighting.

Thanks!
