There have been a lot of posts detailing why rearing spiders may be too difficult to attempt.  I bet if you could acquire an egg case in the spring you might have some luck.  But you would have to be very watchful as the spiderlets love spiderlet for baby food. You surely don't want more than one spider per container till mating time. 

For this reason, I don't know if rearing a "colony" is feasible.  But I bet the answer is NO.

There is a clearing house where people with eggs, cocoons, etc. to share can do so.  If you go to this link, you will see that one other person is interested in buying.  Don't know how often people have them for sale.  You could watch this site.  I've had good luck with them on moth eggs and cocoons.  (I used them two or three times).  Usually the seller/trader has some helpful advice on rearing.

Many spider species have been raised successfully from egg sacs or spiderlings.  Nephila species have been raised, including in colonies, for display at many of the insect zoos in the U.S. and abroad.  N. madagascarensis is one of the favorites for display because of its' colors and ease of raising.  Colonies of spiders are known to 'collapse' due to inbreeding (?).  Most summers I put a Nephila and/or Argiope on my partially screened back porch and they grow and create eggs sacs for many months.  Spiders in captivity or porch need insects, and I find leaving the light on at night or leaving some overripe fruit around helps feed the spiders on the porch.  I will try to find some articles on rearing Nephila from the Proceedings of the 'Invertebrates in Captivity Conferences' of the past and see if I can find pdf's of them or can scan them to email.  These are now called 'Invertebrates in Education and Conservation Conference'  and are held every summer.  They attract educators, curators, and researchers from the insect zoos, butterfly houses, and universities.  You will find many people with a lot of practical experience.  Sadly, I have not been able to attend for years.  Will make contact here or via message soon.  There are a few commercial suppliers that do have Nephila at times.  I get them here in South Carolina and there is a new invasive species from Asia that was found in late 2014 in Georgia not far from here.  Nephila when they are large enough will build webs that interconnect and you can keep them in 'colonies' but you do need to make sure to provide insects for food.

Skyler - have you progressed in your plans at all?  Once the Nephila are out it is fairly easy to capture and transport them.  You will primarily need to find females, but make sure they have mated or look for the small male.  Long term colonies are possible, but you may need to supplement with a new male for some genetic diversity.  I am looking forward to my Nephila eggsacs to hatch and am hoping that some will stay on my porch or in my yard.

 Robert - Thank you following up with me, that article did help a lot by the way and I very much appreciate it. In terms of collection of the Nephila, I actually start the second week of may. The main spider I plan on collecting is the Basilica Orb Weaver but I do plan on collecting Nephila as well.

While I am at the edge of the range of Nephila I will keep my eyes open for them.  I would certainly appreciate any data on the extent of their range so records from you or anyone reading this would be greatly appreciated.  They do seem to have expanded their range slightly in the past few decades.
