Hello everyone,

For an assignment, we need to manually calculate the stresses, strains and deformations of a cantilever beam that undergoes torsion (fig 1 and screenshot8). After, we also have to analyse the same problem in ANSYS APDL.

I'm not familiar with this software and have some questions:

What element type should I use for this problem and why? I was thinking about a beam 188 element type, but I'm not sure if this is the best option since it says that variation in distribution of shear stresses is not accounted for.

How small should the mesh be? We've seen that a correct mesh size is important to get a good result out of the FE approximation. This can be done by calculating the potential energy of the structure for different numbers of elements, but how do I practically do this?

On fig1, a mesh is seen, but this was just to experiment with the software. Thanks in advance!

Kind regards
