Off the top of my head, what approach you would take would depend on the country in which you were aiming to work/study, because a lot would depend on how public health is organised - ie, is it a function of local, or national, government.

In the UK, most public health is a national government function, (although substantially devolved in Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland) driven through the National Health Service. However, local government is largely responsible for food safety.

I think that there is a Faculty of Public Health Medicine in the UK which is responsible for academic oversight, and NHS Health Boards will have Postgraduate Deans who can offer further advice on careers.

Full marks to Chris Graham for mentioning MPH courses - my own universities of Dundee and Glasgow both run such courses, as do several others - and also for reminding about the need to successfully complete two years Foundation Training before embarking on career pathways.

There are many fields exists where you can excel like MSW, MHA, MPH, MBA, M.Phil in clinical psychology etc. But Finally, only your potency will count to give justice to your discipline as well as a job.

One can have formal training in Public Health, staring from Certificate course, Diploma Course, MPH. MD Community Medicine or Community Health and PhD. But in case one is really intrested in having training in Public Health than he must work at grass root level working with Community/ NGOs or any other such oppurtunity. After having 2-3 years experience, go to formal training programmme.I am sure the competencies such person will develop , will altogether different & more satisfying.

In Australia we have two community medicine options (referred to as GP- general practitioner, here), one general and one rurally focused- both require medical registration in Australia which can be tricky to get. MPH programmes are very helpful- the JCU offering, particularly MPH&TM (masters of public health and tropical medicine) would work really well in a SE Asian context. There is a wide range of options, including clinical and placement subjects and many can be studied externally or as a short block. There are many international students who take this option, the cohorts are diverse in experience and background and create an awesome ongoing contacts network.

In our context MD Community Medicine is seen as a superior degree than MPH and this transcends to MPH degree holders to be seen as inferiors.

In Serbia we have different "residentcy'' in Epidemiology, Social medicine, Medical statistics and bioinformatics, Hygiene, Occupation health. There is also MPH and PhD. EU states have one residentsy in Preventive medicine.

In my opinion, MPH should be master for clinicians, and especially for primary healthcare doctors.
