This is quite a difficult question to answer specifically as it will depend on your hypothesis question. My best advise is to do a small literature review from the likes of systematic review papers of your topic. From there you should be able to define some variable/metrics specifically aimed to your question. Hope this helps.

Conduct a literature review:

• To familiarize yourself with the current state of knowledge on your topic
• To ensure that you're not just repeating what others have already done
• To identify gaps in knowledge and unresolved problems that your research can address
• To develop your theoretical framework and methodology
• To provide an overview of the key findings and debates on the topic

Following are a few acceptable sources for literature reviews:

1. Peer reviewed journal articles.

2. Edited academic books.

3. Articles in professional journals.

4. Statistical data from government websites.

5. Website material from professional associations

If your approach is quantitative, you might use Porter's Five Forces Framework. In qualitative approach you can ask open questions about your topic.
