Does anyone have experience based recommendations for a good open source Gantt chart software (or similar project management software)? Looking for something with the capacity to be shared/updated by a geographically distributed research team and also able to show the whole life of a 3-5 year research project.

I suggest using ganttproject.biz . It's quite light-weight.
You'll need to also install Java 7 in your OS in order to run this application.
