The WFIRS doesn't assess symptoms of ADHD, but only impairment.

The Conners Adult ADHD Rating Scale (CAARS) is better for that.

The Barkley Deficits in Executive Function Scale (BDEFS) assesses executive dysfunction due to ADHD.

Still, if cost is a factor, CADDRA, the excellent Canadian organization of ADHD professionals, has long made freely available its practice guidelines, including the WFIRS-S.

I just checked the website (CADDRA.ca), and it's now available only to members or for a reasonable fee to non-members.

Good point Maryam, I was just hoping to find a simple self-report inventory of symptoms so I could determine which among my participants likely have or do not have ADHD (and I really want the measure to have submeasures for hyperactive/impulsive and inattentive subtypes). I was also open to finding a dimensional scale for attention or hyperactivity/impulsivity.

To specify, this is not work within a clinical lab—it is within a social-personality cognitive psych lab. This is my senior honors thesis project. So, going as far as full clinical assessment or impairment measures is not necessary.

This has been very helpful—if anyone has anymore suggestions/comments I will be happy to hear them.

I think the ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS) and the Weiss Functional Impairment Rating Scale (WFIRS) Self-Report are the best options for what you are searching for.

Okay I was thinking of going with ASRS as well but wasn’t sure if WFIRS would be necessary/useful for my purposes. Especially because I want to be able to distinguish between the subtypes and WFRIS seems allude to symptoms but doesnt categorize in terms of hyperactive/impulsive vs. inattentive. The project is also about Approach/Avoidance motives, Big Five Personality traits (just extraversion and neuroticism), and emotion regulation.

Any more comments based on this?

Maryam—I am looking into additonal funding so I can afford CAARS but as of now I do not have access to it. But that is an interesting point. Thank you!

As I mentioned previously, I would endorse that point. The CAARS is well-validated, has been widely used in research on Adult ADHD (including my own) and has scales that are normed for age and gender. I don't know of any other scale that meets those criteria and includes all of the following scales. The publisher (MHS) may be able to provide a discount for use in research. There is a Short Form that is less expensive that may meet your needs. In the past, however, that Short Form did not include the DSM scales, which are important for diagnostic purposes.

Yes, I am aware of all of this, but as of now I do not have the funding. I found the short form without scoring online as well and I don’t think it would work for my purposes. What I really want to focus on with the ADHD measure is hyperactivity/impulsivity and inattention. The rest is not essential as my original hypothesis does not predict anything regarding impulsivity alone or self concept. I’m hesitant to add those new variables anyways because I don’t want to over complicate my data analysis, and I would have to reconsider my main hypotheses.

I thank you for your input on this—I will reconsider CAARS as I re-evaluate my funding situation.

Are you researching ADHD? I am interested in meeting other researchers who have done behavioral research on adults with ADHD, specifically excluding pharma solutions. My dissertation research was focused on adults with ADHD and their workplace experiences.

Hi Jill—I am interested in continuing to research ADHD after I graduate from undergrad, but the research isn’t really behavioral. This experiment that’s in the works now is just surveys and questionnaires with 1 emotion regulation manipulation
