The topic must be a controversial issue facing the field of education specific to your specialization and not a problem that is addressed at the local level. The topic must be an issue or problem that has experts suggesting at least two (2) distinct sides to the issue, both presenting valid points of view. The candidate will be expected to complete an extensive and intensive discussion of all sides of the chosen issue, giving specific strengths and weaknesses of both sides with equal fervor. All points of view must be backed by appropriate research data, not just opinions, and the points of view must be given equal representation. The candidate must then address how they would deal with a disagreement among educational stakeholders on this issue. In a conclusion section, the candidate will present their own thoughts and ideas justified by supporting sources. Extensive use of primary source information will be expected.

By pro/con topic, do you mean exploring the pros and cons of a method, philosophy or technology in adult education? If so, you could explore pros and cons of online learning/ internet technologies in adult education, pros and cons of community-based experiential education, or pros and cons of arts-based pedagogies. Really the sky is the limit. Explore any facet of adult education and research what works and what doesn't.

I agree with the previous response of Bethany, there are many topics in the field of education to be addressed as pro/con topics but i can add something here you have to select first the scope such as:
1.Learning/teaching methodologies
2. Assessment and evaluations
3. learner's characteristics
4. curriculum development
then you think about exploring the topic by quick search in the internet sources about the controversial discussion which can open the door for you to understand from where to start
Further to the previous posts... the best way to start 'research' is to DO research! I had a similar problem posed to me in my undergraduate days. To FIND topics worthy of development, you must first read the existing discussions (some of which will be needed for your references anyway -take good notes!). The "issues" that are either controversial or undecided should have fairly recent and continuing discussions of all of the necessary points already in print. If it's not being discussed, it's probably a fairly settled topic or approach - not that you can't stir things up a bit yourself. Certainly, at the graduate level this should be a real development and research, not just an undergraduate-level compilation and review of current trends.
I would recommend you look at the topic area of the impact of learning and ROI. For example, is it possible to measure the ROI on learning investments for employees? Some would assert that not all benefits of learning are quantifiable or that some learning is not intended to produce immediate and observable benefits. You could include discussion regarding intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation among learners and how that impacts outcomes. Lots of opportunities there!
