What have we seen that is helping patients with Traumatic brain injuries and Acquired Brain Injuries to assist them in their rehabilitation, particularly long term patients? What evidence of successes are there and how can we use them to assist outpatients
There is a substantial literature on this. Search an academic data base (Psych, Educational, Medical journals) for TBI and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) or TBI and Cognitive-behavioral interventions.
There is a growing body of evidence that suggests that positive behaviour support (PBS) interventions can be effective in reducing challenging behaviours and improving quality of life for individuals with acquired brain injury (ABI). A recent systematic review of the literature found that PBS interventions were associated with significant reductions in behavioural problems and improvements in quality of life for individuals with ABI (Gill et al., 2016). In addition, a number of case studies and anecdotal reports have highlighted the successes of PBS interventions for individuals with ABI (e.g., see Brain Injury Association of America, n.d.; Hom & Kavanagh, 2014; Togher & Ashburner, 2007).
There are a number of potential explanations for why PBS interventions may be effective for individuals with ABI. First, PBS interventions are individualized to the specific needs of the individual and are based on a thorough functional assessment of the individual’s behaviours. This assessment process can help to identify the reasons why an individual may be engaging in challenging behaviours (e.g., seeking attention, avoiding certain activities, seeking sensory stimulation), which can then be addressed through the implementation of specific intervention strategies. Second, PBS interventions typically involve a team approach, with input from a variety of professionals (e.g., psychologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists) as well as family members/carers. This team approach ensures that all of the individual’s needs are being considered and that the intervention plan is comprehensive. Finally, PBS interventions are typically long-term in nature, which allows for a gradual implementation of new skills and behaviours.
Overall, the evidence suggests that PBS interventions can be effective in reducing challenging behaviours and improving quality of life for individuals with ABI. However, it is important to note that PBS interventions are complex and individualized, and therefore require a significant commitment from all involved.
PBS would be helpful and successful for ABI since both terms are interrelated in the sense that PBS therapy has many branches which are helping to cure or to treat the ABI patients well in accordance with the change in environment, care giving methods and person's interaction and many researchers have done brilliant work on the same literature in the recent year. So according to me PBS would be Successful in PBI if best suited component is used.
