If someone is 'acknowledged', however, in sources that are not widely known of, read or ranked - then it is not really benefiting or impacting anyone.

You must acknowledge the help received from others. There is no academic benefit but it is one kind of ethics. However, do not think that putting the names of renowned persons under acknowledgment will help you to get the paper published.
