Every one wants meaningfulness in life. It includes getting appreciation for excellence, promotion over a period of time, and looking for a better tomorrow. Ranks in any service differentiate between those who deserve to be recognized on the basis of their contribution and attainments of excellence. Therefore, when some very young academic make exponential contribution to academics they would want promotion early so as to do still better later on. Others who make mediocre efforts do not want to be left behind. Therefore, they would be satisfied by promotion through a slower ladder.

Dear Zaid, the academic rank is the given according to the experience and vacancy only. For instance, the vice dean may excellent, appreciated by the management team but he may not promote as a dean until the post is vacant. It is very unlikely that due to excellency of vice dean the management promoted him as dean and demoted the dean as vice dean.

Academic rank is a promotion system depending on the number and quality of researches.

Academic Ranks is useful to prevent the development of simulation system in research training. Lime dissertation, as you know, is a big problem not only in education but also in science.

I agree with Kamal Academic ranking is a promotion system depending on researching, quality of teaching and services including community services, in addition to helping the university in receiving grants. Without this system some of the faculty staff will not perform research and will not develop their teaching style or tools. It does not cause a financial burden to the university because this is a basic right for the faculty staff to be promoted according to their efforts in the 4 pillars of the function of the academicians (Research, Teaching, Services, and Administration), and one aspect of this promotion that their salary increase as a result of this promotion

There is no financial burden at all. It is very motivating factor for academic staff, although the differences in salaries is very small from assistant professor to full professor! These are the facts from Serbia!

That is the way it should be, because it is a hard and long way from assistant to full professor! Blood, sweat and tears sometimes! :)

Nice one, dear Ljubomir, The salary of associate prof,and assistant Prof are not very different here. I think it is around 10%. I became associate professor this week. There was some sweat and hard work but fortunately there was no blood!.

Academic ranking are useful to represent hierarchical structure of experimented scholars and in the same time to ameliorate salaries through the promotion system; However evaluation of teachers, Phd advisers and permanent researchers must be distinguished as the jobs' requirements are not same. Another big problem pointed by Sylantyev is "the Lime dissertation" that must be fight as it could deprave all the academic ranking system. Congratulation Berhouz for your promotion; hope you other success; for me promotion and evaluation as full researcher were blocked for many years, without scientific or academic reasons, for a decade my salary is same. I have been ranked one time during 24 years of professional life, may be because i'm not part of the system 'political???'

I agree with you you Kamal. Promotion shaould be according to a promotion criteria, announced to all.

Yes Kamal and Mahfuz, promotion has no relationships with politics. Official rules and criteria are clearly identified for all. But when the officers transgress them without any possibility to recourse their biased decisions, it becomes part of a hidden political (and the true) human resources management policy, i.e the system chooses his people 'even if they do not meet the criteria', the others who are sound not part of the system are disqualified

Three things in the following order: FIGHT, FIGHT and FIGHT! That is what should be done dear @Ziad!

Yes Kamal we must do the proper things or what we assume to be right. However one could fight an adversary who is assumed to be with equivalent arms or arguments in hand. But with disproportional arms and power, it looks like a suicide.

Very courageous Ljubomir, don't give up. For me I have given up, i've chosen my moral, mental and health security, waiting for a turnover of the wheel. I've understood that fighting an adversary who exhibits several faces (or assumed to be), who do not wants to listen to ones requests and who has absolute power on ones life  is a real pathway to a suicide or to a mental disease like.
