Among the articles I am reading, there is a phrase that says "Bi3+ has a lone pair of electrons in its 6 s subatomic shell, which is responsible for the observable defect screening ability." But I don't quite understand.

It sounds like “defect screening ability” is possessed by “lone pair of electrons,” but I don’t know the correlation between “lone pair of electrons” and “defect screening ability.”
