My manuscript status shows "With Editor" after initial submission. Then, (after two weeks) it takes "Editor invited". After one and half months it backs again to the first step i.e., "With Editor" and once again the status changes into "Editor invited". I really do not understand why it takes these different positions with taking more time than expected? What would this indicate? Could anyone make me clear in this regard. Thank you.

Do not worry, it is normal, sure there is a certain circumstance for delay, But do you know that I submitted a manuscript to an indexed journal within Scopes and I was not answered for more than four months, So I withdrew it and published the paper in another journal, i.e. the Editor of the first journal was not really well organized.
The possible reason could be, the editor first invited some editor to handle your paper, in such case the status is "Editor invited". Later, the one whom editor invited might not respond or have some problem such as time constrain and beyond their interest and could reject the editor invitation. In such a case, the paper is again returned back to editor and status changed to "with editor".

1. After submission, appropriate editor should be assigned.
2. The changes in status may be due to changes in Editor or finding a suitable editor from your field.
3. The status 'with Editor or Editor Assigned' will depend upon the journal 1st decision, which is especially high for some journal.
Hi Ramesh Raj Pant, fortunately we never accounted this particular situation before. However, to me it mainly means that the Editors of the journal are not really well organized. Normally (at least in our field of research: chemistry) the journals have an Editor-in-Chief and a number of associate Editor. The Editor-in-Chief receives the manuscript and then assigns it to one of the Associate Editor. The Associate Editor will then send it to the reviewers.
You're welcome! Personally I feel that six weeks after submission of your manuscript there is no reason to worry too much. Reviewing processes can even be slowed down due to the current Corona crisis.

Sometimes that will take time depending on the topic you are submitting but be patience.
