About brittleness index unit?

I need an explanation for the unit of the brittleness index? Although the brittleness index (BI) is calculated from the ratio of Vickers hardness in gigapascal to fracture toughness in MPa m1/2 the unit of BI is um-1/2 instead of m-1/2.
