Hi all,

Model descriptions: I am modelling a three-dimensional frame in ABAQUS to assess the vertical deflection of a corner column when the support was removed. As you can tell, this is a robustness assessment. The frame is discretised with ABAQUS B32 BEAM element and all the beams are supporting line load (kN/m) to represent the floor load. To simulate a damage scenario, the support of one of the 4 corner columns was removed and the deflection at that point due to the applied floor load is measured.

Issue: The problem is when I refine the mesh of the beams in the model by increasing the no. of elements, the vertical deflection under the unsupported column also increases (stress also increases). The deflection does not seem to converge and increase infinitely. For me, it seems like the frame gets "softer" (i.e. decrease in bending stiffness) as the no. of elements in the beams increases. Does anyone has experienced this before? This looks similar to the stress singularity issue that occurs in SOLID/SHELL element model around the sharp corners, however, will a similar thing happens in the BEAM element model too??

Many thanks if anyone could point out something I should check. I have attached my model FYI.

Regards,

Heng
