Hi guys,

As per the title, I am looking to define the characteristic length (CL) for my shell element in ABAQUS. I have looked at the manual and it says the CL for shell element is the square root of the integration point (IP) area. What is meant by "square root of integration point (IP) area" in this regard? From my understanding, this means the area enclosed by 4 IPs in the shell element in a typical S4 element as shown in the snip below. However, I am using S4R element and there is only 1 IP in the centre of the shell element, so how do I calculate the CL in S4R?

I have seen people mention that the CL is simply the square root of the area of the shell element. Is this correct? Would be great if any references can be provided on this claim.

Many thanks!

Heng
