I am currently writing my masters thesis on additive manufacturing and I would like to simulate LPBF. I simulate parts on Abaqus by reactivating elements and adding heat input from top surface. My simulation is coupled temp-displacement and I use C3D4T,C3D6T,C3D8T elements. Upon inspection I see that elements heat up on the top side as expected, but they somehow cool down on the opposite side. This is visible in both the newly reactivated element and on the baseplate as simulation increases. There is no radiation or convection in the system, and mesh size makes no difference. What is the reason for this behaviour, how can I fix this?

One potential issue could be related to the material properties you are using in the simulation. If the thermal conductivity or specific heat capacity of the material is not accurate, it could affect the temperature distribution in the model. You may also want to consider using elements that are specifically designed for simulating melting and solidification, such as the C3D8R element, which is a reduced integration element that can better capture the behavior of materials undergoing phase changes.
