When I was in high school, I was taught the worldview of Daniel Chester French, a U.S. sculptor, who espoused the Renaissance idea of there being essentially only four continents: Asia, America, Europe, Africa.  Asia was the cradle of world religions and of the opium trade.  America was the cradle of liberty, prosperity, and domination over the indigenous peoples.  Europe was the seat of empire, sea power, and intelligence. Africa was dormant as the "dark continent" and untapped resources. French created the four continents as he saw them in the form of 4 sculptures (1902)  placed before the U. S. Customs Office in Washington, D.C.  As soon as I left high school for university life, I discovered the bias and shortsightedness of French´s view of the world. When I had children of my own, they asked me about the culture and history of the parts of the world.  What, in your view, should I tell them about the continents and their culture? What would you prefer to be known about your own continent? Please correct French´s vision if necessary. Be as specific as possible and cite articles, books, and other artworks on the theme if applicable.  Here below I append pictures of French´s "Asia," "America," "Europe," and "Africa."
