In last few years there is a dramatic change in the development of technology. The manufacturing which was more or less manual has almost transformed in to automation or robotics based. Design which was manual drawing based has been replaced by computer based design and 3D printing has further improved the technology development.

As such the academic institutions are finding it difficult to teach fundamentals and also train their students to these technological changes taking place in the industry at more greater pace then witnessed ever before.

The need of the hour is to strike a balance between fundamentals and practical training. Teachers also need regular development to keep pace with changes taking place in the industry and educational institutions are required to invest more in upgrading their training tools.

Time has come when the students are required to be trained in the technology which they are supposed to deal in the field to enhance their employ-ability.

University is responsible for providing and transfering knowledge to the graduates. While the skill is achieved by practicing the knowledge to the field. Providing relevant jobs and appropriate tasks for the fresh graduate is no longer the responsibility of university. It's the work of multi sectoral agencies which also includes relevant industries in a specific field.

There are some universities that are trying to upgrade their teachers and students by providing them with training. But the major factor comes when the job companies want experienced person as a candidate. Everywhere there is a problem regarding experience, links, etc. So, completely we cannot say university is responsible for this. Job market also should be equally responsible for this.

Those who are the sufferers becoming entrepreneur and giving employment to others. This is the time to change the job market and universities.

Valid Concern Professor!

This is perhaps a national concern where all stake holders are responsible and playing blame game.

Student: The age in which student is expected to play chess of life they are engaged with playing carom and pubG. A graduate engineer should know that engineering is a journey and he is a Solution Provider and the solutions of problem starts from his own house, colony, area or even class room. The student should frequently ask himself a question may be once in each semester that “whether I am becoming an engineer or I am just doing Engineering”? Jobs are for engineers only and not for people with degree only. Develop skill sets which are listed in graduate attributes.

Parent: I find the parents of this generation are the weakest …… they are so helpless in front of their own child. From my experience my theory in this – “Behind every unsuccessful student there is a successful father and an innocent mother”. Parents are unable to imbibe the basic attributes to their kids like discipline, time management, creativity etc and expect everything from school then college then Government and finally blame everyone but self.

School: I think schools are responsible for killing the creativity in a student right from his childhood, also I advocate to consider the diversity of Indian society while formulating policies and not try to fix Mercedes parts in Maruti. Sports is never part of curriculum ……… students learn to earn success in sports field only they loose and they come back again to win.

College: The College should focus on producing industry ready professional considering what skill sets are desired in the industry. There should be a set of co-curricular and extracurricular activities designed for each branch and each semester.

For example some of co- curricular activities which we adopt in our Civil Engineering department:

Sem 1 Communication skills – written (email etc) and oral. Auto CAD Beginner level

Sem 2 Aptitude and reasoning

Sem 3 Survey Camp – for contouring fields, triangulations using theodolite and then total station

Seminar, Report, Auto CAD Basic level

Site Visit : Cement plant, Brick factory.

Sem 4 Auto CAD – Civil Drawing - Plan section elevation (To be submitted as minor project)

Site Visit: Road work (Rigid and flexible pavement)

4-6 weeks Internship

Sem 5 STAAD Pro –

Site Visit: Airport, Dams and reservoirs

Sem 6 GIS, MX ROAD, STAAD PRO advance level.

Site Visit: Ready mix plant, Water treatment plant, sewage treatment plant.

4-6 weeks Internship

In final year students should be allowed to choose their area of interest and engage in relevant minor project.

GATE is compulsory for all students.

Faculties: Every faculty thinks that he is the best which is not true. The management should ensure that faculty is making efforts to upgrade his own abilities and also incorporating new things to enlighten his teaching. Faculty should understand the diversity in learning capacity and learning behavior of the students and must respect individuality of the student. Even IIT Profs are complaining about the attitude of the students. One should remember that the student spend a good amount of time with vibrant and action packed virtual world of internet. Small kids when they cry parents hand over their mobile phones to the baby, it all began from childhood it is almost impossible for the student to concentrate in the class unless there is some fun and entertainment involved in it, people will criticize for this but it is fact as a learning facilitator one might have to do all this.

Industry: is very dynamic and is always on the move they should connect with the institute themselves as part of their CSR in the cause of nation building to guide or mentor students.

Social media: We have to live with it now, major disruption can be seen in the society and I feel that society needs proper counseling otherwise it will lead to other national issues.
