To recognize top achievers in an institution of higher learning (say for their contribution in peer mentoring), which in your opinion is a better prize for students -- (a) a fancy certificate that can be framed to demonstrate their achievement or (b) a book/collection of books? What is the reason for your choice?
Give them both - a certificate is good from objective and measurable point of view - it will be part of their CV, while books are good awards from ''non-measurable'' point of view. Books are treasures that enrich their inner CV - their self-confidence, self-awareness, knowledge etc.
The student should be given both - a set of books as well as a certificate. The books will help him/her remember the occasion as well as benefit from reading them and the certificate will be part of the person's portfolio of achievements.
In my opinion, human nature always aspires to excellence and certificates of appreciation is one of the indicators of excellence , So the answer is ( a ) ... Books are the means to reach the level of knowledge to obtain certificates (As an indicator of continuing in the tender).

I am Sure Appreciation Certificate is much more better than any other Appreciation given to the Students. It looks good on CV and remains for ever. No one knows or asks how many books you own.

Why not both?! A certficate of recognition is always nice. Also, it would be really thoughtful and useful to give a book as learning never ends!

I really believe both are better, yet, we can do more to recognize top achievers by students like:
1. Give them a book, but give it to them during some events of the university or the school.
2 . Give them a Certificate during that ceremony.
3. Give medals for top 3 of them.
4. Take a memorial picture for this event.
5. Publish some article about this event with the pictures in the monthly or yearbook of the university or the school.
Certainly a book. Most of students deserving this certificate are humble and intelligent people. They understand that a good book has a much higher value than a formal recognition of the activity they considered as a labor of love anyways. Yet, there could be a signed note inside the book that it's a recognition gift in memory of a great job by Mr/s XYZ in helping out his/her peers.
A book or a certificate? The ideal would be both book and certificate. However, in case of only one option, I prefer the latter (certificate).

A certificate is necessary for employers and future colleges and universities. Books are necessary too, but it depends what they are.
For a young career man, I would suggest a certificate (inform of recommendation letter). This will assist him/her to attract Employers.

Both are presented to acknowledge students achievement. I personally like to get certificates and some students like it too. But other students enjoy reading books.

when you asking book and certificate. we can assume that the target person has equal capacity to achieve a prestigious certificate and write a quality book. If the certificate is like PhD or master or bachelor i will go for both adjusting my time. in case of other certificates.... i dont think a good quality book is comparable... but be sure that the person has the capacity write a real book or book chapter
Acerticate will definitely be better since he's in an early career stage
Any individual under a top achiever in institution has certainly with him the knowledge for the top achievement for which in order to maintain his standing it is obvious that he must have been endorsed in the library & the books & in this line it is better to have a certificate for his standing credit & performance

In case of a professional career, certificate is more useful.

A certificate is meant for certifying the worthy recipient(s) about his/her/their accomplishment, performance, achievement or feat. It is a handy paper to show as a document for evidential proof or to attach in the personal CV to establish one's ability for a particular job.
Book is a wonderful material to gift a person as a token of appreciation. Packed with information, knowledge and words of experience and wisdom, it is excellent, time-tested and probably the best gift particularly to the students.
Both are apt and essential subject to situation, money, time and purpose.
Book(s) Prof Shah !!!!! I think that reflects the level of understanding one has , certificates and A to Z behind our names are not too fancy anymore !!! I like books and I admire Prof who have written books , well even I aspire to write book(S) ...

I Think certificate is better than the book , it makes him/her proud and raise the power of motivations
I think both are important ; to the student a certificate that they would be proud off as well as a book as a reward for their achievements

Give them a Certificate! Reason: I will not measured by the number of books I have but the certificate is a sign of qualification.

If there is only one choice certificate is a better option as it will add a good line in their CVs. If there is possibility to give them both we should go for it as it would be an act of improving their CVs as well as their knowledge. However, the choice of the books in question should be wisely done so that they can gain at least something from the books. These days, the market is full of books that occupy only space but fail to transmit any form of knowledge.

A certificate will definitely be useful in future endeavors regarding further education and job applications. A very good book, on the other hand, will enlighten the students in some key aspects in life which a certificate cannot offer. Nonetheless, a book can always be obtained from book shops and libraries but certificate can not.
today's digital ,internet,mobile world avoid books because f interested can be accessed easily , i recommend certificate with clear cut remark of appreciation
