Hello. I have two cylinders in contact (line contact) and i am modelling quarter symmetry model. My model has been solved for higher loads (5000-20000 N) but for lower amount of load (100-5000) i am getting an element distortion error and solution can not obtained.
I am using ANSYS APDL software with scripting. I have SOLID185 elements and surface to surface contact ( CONTA174 & Targe170) elements.

It is not clear:
- why you model one quarter. Your geometry has only one plane of symmetry, not two planes. You are not modelling two cylinders, but two half-cylinders;
- why to use a 3D FE model. This unnecessarily increase the computation time, without any improvement of the accuracy. You can simply use a 2D model under plane strain or plane stress;

Yes you @ denis Benasciutti are right i have considered initially the 2D case initially but my deformation results are not matching very well with the analytical solutions that is why i want to compare it with 3D case if it fits?
and regarding symmtery if you consider two cylinders in contact with each other ( in my case gap between two cylinder is initially close but let's assume there is gap ) then i can consider the quarter model or not? if yes then what effect would it have of initial gap. Please consider that this is the friction less contact.
Thanks for this manual. As mentioned in this manual they also considers quarter model isn't it make sense to you? i am also interested in your view regarding this.
