I will start my PhD maybe this year regarding phased array antennas.
I'm interested in to find more detailed information about 3D phased array antennas and 2D phased array antennas.
Then I will be writing an overview paper (comparison between those two), in order to make me decide which one the (2D or the 3D) will be more suitable for the application, before start design, building and testing it.

Antenna Theory and Design by Stutzman chapter 8 has a good discussion on planar (2D) phased arrays. You should also be able to find some papers that discuss the analysis of 3D phased arrays.
The best solution will be digital antenna arrays. These arrays with digital beamforming have more benefits than phased antenna arrays with phase shifters.
Concerning 2D and 3D structures I need to say that I saw a publications regarding 3D arrays, but 10 years before. You can use Googlle search for detecting these publications. But the main disadvantage of 3D structure is mutual shading of antenna elements in different layers. The better area for 3D array is hydroacoustic.
There are very good technical book on the topic are available. And Enormous publications in good repute journal are available.
Now the point is should we focus on 2D or 3D structure. It is became very tricky to choose one, As both has got its own plus and minus point. As regard to 3D array we have been working with it. we have seen a 3D the array for multiple target with its position tracking in strategic scenario . On the other hand a vary precise 2D array at port for ship tracking.
I would strongly suggest you Pl. give more focus on digital antenna array, as it gives more advantage then phased array. It can be implemented in both 2Dand 3D application. The only constrain which you may face is funding for your research.
