Why not? I guess it could be an impurity. I've never heard of that happening, but anything is possible. It could also just be an error in your analysis. I don't think people normally look for zinc in analyzing the surface of float glass. We never did because we had no reason to suspect it would be there. It could certainly diffuse into the surface in the same way the tin does. Both diffuse as divalent ions.

This would be highly unusual for western quality glass. The float glass forming process uses high purity tin specifically to avoid issues like these. With that said if you are finding the contamination only on the tin side of the glass it is possible that the glass is coming from a low quality supplier who isn't using a high enough purity tin in their bath.
