I'm currently wondering about how long should a journal takes from submission to give first decision based on your experiences. From what I have experienced, several journals gave a around 1 to 2 months for the decision. Some journals from dovepress even give answer less than 1 month. However, currently one of the journal that I have sent my manuscript hasn't even replied for 6 months. How is this even possible? I hear some people wait around 1.5 years for the decision only to be rejected without explanations.
These are usual timings. Do not worry too much even if it takes two years.
Dear @Kevin Winston Most journals now believe in rapid processing of submissions, and offer first editorial decisions between one to six weeks. However, there are some journals (eg. Current science, journal of plant nutrition, biotechnology and genetic engineering reviews, etc) which may take more than one year to provide their first editorial decision. These journals don't respond to even authors' reminders. These journals also take test of authors' patience.

Most of the journals put six weeks but, based on experience, much depends on pure luck!

I echo most of he previous authors comments. It is really variable. if the letter is really original or creative, then usually the response is quick. Otherwise, unless you are a known figure (you will surprise when some one known in the field, their paper get published quickly), it is pure luck!
