It is a common saying that the devil is in the detail. It is very true of good research methodology. It is the ability to bring in details that tends to make it difficult to refute an argument.
Parallel to devil in detail, the sting is in the tail. Obviously it is a reference to scorpion. But Scorpio is not my zodiac sign. I am a harmless and friendly Aquarius! However, in most of my oped columns a reader has to watch out for my last one or two paragraphs to feel the sting! I consider it as another feature of my methodology as a writer for the common public, not to research community!
That is precisely why the "New History" (since the school of Annales) recommends quantification, rather than being contented with qualitative descriptions. Enjoyed the humour in your response! That too should not be absent from any methodology. How about mathematics? It should not be difficult to for statistics to keep a count of humourless teachers / researchers!
