I am pretty sure you can link any papers you like to a project. But what you add to your project is up to you, whether it is your own personal project or a general topic shared by many people.

My opinion is that ResearchGate could make many improvements such as better ways to share projects; a way to "thread" discussions so we can reply to specific posts within a topic; better ways to search for questions/answers or topics of interest; etc... But I think ResearchGate is pretty good for a free service and all, we can't ask too much from it.
