Weber’s theory of electrodynamics - even though it quite accurately describes the forces between charges in motion, is often looked down as something not consistent with the real scientific scenario despite the fact that no experiments have been done to prove its invalidity. To put matters worse, less than a handful of papers had ever been published in this regard that too failed to evoke mass acceptance.
The attached article proposes an experiment that if done could prove the existence (or non existence) of a force that was predicted by Wilhelm Eduard Weber. Please reply
Classical Electrodynamis belongs to Faraday and Maxwell, not to Weber.
I find this discussion very intriguing. I have found the article by Assi and Silva on the comparison between Weber's electrodynamics and classical electrodynamics, but was unable to download the article by Jefimenko titled "is magnetic filed due to an electric current a relativistic effect?'. I do agree with you on this that modern electrodynamics belong to Maxwell and faraday. however, at the time when maxwell was stacking up the formulas, Weber too developed a theory on electrodynamics which was consitent with faradays experiments.
According to relativity, a massed object alters the space around it and when another massed object comes near to it, it accelerates because of the altered space. So there is no direct interaction between the two massed objects. Similarly, in Maxwell's electrodynamics, a moving charged particle (current) causes a magnetic field around it and if another charged particle is moving (perpendicular) in this magnetic field, this charged particle experiences a force. Here too there is no direct magnetic interaction between the charged particles. (I believe, this is where Weber's equation scores when compared to Maxwell's and hence the experiment -pease watch the linked youtube video for the reason).
Weber's electrodynamics however predicts a direct interaction between charged particles in relative motion. There has been an experiment done on this regard-
(LEMON D. K., W. Farrell EDWARDS and C. S. KENYON, „Electric potentials associated with steady conduction currents in superconducting coils”, Physics Letters A 162 (1992) 105-114)
-and detected a potential difference in accordance with Weber’s electrodynamics, however, the interpretation of its results have been controversial.
Additionally, at the time Maxwell was publishing his theories, he believed that a conducting wire was neutral, that there is no lateral potential associated with it. However, the existence of a lateral potential relating to 0th and 1st order of current flowing in the circuit has been verified by later researchers. Nevertheless, the one caused by the 2nd order of current flowing through the circuit (predicted by Weber and comparatively very small in magnitude) remains to be proved.
The experiment proposed in the article has an advantage that it is free from the effects of 0th and 1st order of current flowing through the circuit. Therefore, it can quite detect the one due to the 2nd order of current (please refer to the attached file). The circuit has an additional advantage that both ABCD and PQRS arrangements can be stacked up with multiple such arrangements which should effectively steep up the potential that should make it much easier to detect.
Additionally, even though this is completely concerned with electrodynamics, it could have wide reaching impacts on the knowledge of earth's magnetism, gravitation etc. Since, no stone should be left unturned in the realm of science, I believe such experiments have due importance (even though the results turns out to be negative) and if the results are positive, then we could perhaps better understand magnetism.

Additionally, this experiment is free from the effects of potentials due to 0th (or “static electric potential of a charged (if any) wire”) and 1st (which simply relates to “the wire near the positive terminal is positively charged and the one near negative terminal is negatively charged”) order of currents flowing through the circuit. A few years ago I deduced that within a (on the whole not charged) current carrying conductor a lateral electric field is present. This conclusion is derived from the fact that the flowing current is accompanied by a magnetic field which forces the moving charged particles inward towards the central axis of the conduxctor. As a result of this charge buit up a lateral electric field is created inside the conductor, which compensates in the equlibrum situation for the inward bound magnetic force. However, outside the conductor this electricfield cannot be measured. I enclosed my paper dealing with that effect. It is unfortunately written in Dutch, but he formulas probably speak for themselves. If you are interested I could supply you with an English translation.
