Protein subunits form complexes readily in solution, in order to isolate and chemically fix a structure, would it be feasible to cross link the peptidoglycan chains between interacting subunits?
I would like to use a carbohydrate reactive cross linker for this purpose but I’m not sure if the idea is viable.

Periodate is used to oxidize vicinal diols in sugars to aldehydes, which are then crosslinked using a bis-hydrazide. See the following:

You can explore the chances to use an azido sugar. The metabolite can be integrated in your peptido glycan and the use click chemistry for the cross linking.
