I thought it might be nice to add recent references to this project (Wellness and Animal Welfare), since one of the goals seems to be increasing general knowledge of animal wellness/well-being. I'd be happy to include some of my own, as well as other recent references from zoo researchers and the like.
If we were to add references, what's the best way to go about adding them here? You can add files directly to questions/answers, and that's at least partially helpful. Any better ways to add suggestions?
I'm adding an Early View publication of mine in Zoo Biology now, and let's see how others would like to proceed with adding references.

What a lovely idea. I have never written on this subject but am very conscious of wellbeing in animals, in that I look after bats that could not survive in the wild; when recovered, we release them as soon as possible, to where they were found. But I am conscious that those (usually common pipistrelles) who are unable to be released, need a quality of life. Unless badly injured and in pain, if they eat, groom, socialise (if they are females, in a large vivarium with other females of the same species), look healthy (or, as healthy as possible with damaged wings etc.) and put on weight (not too much!), this seems preferable to euthanasia. Those who are happy with human contact help us, if we teach groups / hold stands about British bats . . our 'education bats'.

Thank you, Mary! Those are helpful references for the general topic, and I'll have to think about the best way to go about building a resource for others interested in wellness-well-being at a broader impact level. :)
Sabrina Brando and I recently submitted a manuscript for publication on zoo back-of-house, wellness-based, environmental and management design. In researching this we found many use references about ambient subjects like acoustics, lighting, ventilation, substrates, furnishings and such as well as the more often considered enrichment and management trends. So I hope your research reference list would have an area about ambient environments. Be interesting to see how you would organize information in such a diverse subject area. Cheers, Jon
