I've been following GW and GCC since 1989 and have created these maps from the Global Surface Summary of the Day data that is kept on the National Climate Data Center's server. The NCDC is currently collecting data from about 11,000 stations world wide.  I have animated GIFs for each day of each year as well as one for the entire period with a single frame for the first day of each month. I keep a summary of the integrated average daily global temperature in an Excel spreadsheet as well as a list of the record highs and lows by month, year, and station. I've never published this, so I'd be interested in collaborating with researchers who have ideas as to how we could use the data. Here's a link to the 2008 daily animation and one to the monthly animation.
