In my opinion, autonomous cars might be not only correlated to the development of electric cars but also it might be correlated to:

1- the road network condition and the available level of service.

2- the availability of fossil fuel in countries like Arab Gulf might be a motivator for these countries to "delay" using such technology to the era after petrol.

3- the culture of the drivers and their will to accommodate such technology

I think autonomous cars can also be powered by gasoline, not necessarily by electricity, but if most, if not all cars are operated by electricity by then, it probably means that our technology has reached a level where we are less reliant on energy generated by fossil fuels, which further implies that most operations are autonomous and are less reliant on man power. So it might be possible by that time.

Sorry for being late to this discussion, but it's a really useful one. I agree with the majority that there is a significant movement to electronic vehicles and thus, future autonomous vehicles are likely to be also electronic vehicles. The environmental benefits, improvements to battery technology and the charging networks in many countries are likely to help advance the use of these over traditional ICE vehicles.

Both are different and can be same too. Any car can be autonomous weather it is electric or not.

But since the following future trends are developing in the automotive sector and in the sphere of the necessary infrastructure: the development of electromobility including the development of electromobility combined with hydrogen fuel, the development of autonomous vehicle technology, the development of smart cities, the development of renewable energy sources, the development of 5G technology, etc. so it cannot be ruled out that autonomous electric cars or autonomous cars powered by burning hydrogen in oxygen will be mass-produced in the future. The following research question can therefore be formulated: What are the determinants of the development of autonomous electric or hydrogen-fuelled vehicles? These determinants may combine a number of different issues related, on the one hand, to e.g. For example, the development of more efficient batteries to power electric motors, but also their disposal due to increasing environmental regulations and the recovery of rare metals used in the production of these batteries; the development of the necessary infrastructures for battery charging stations; the development of additional energy sources, notably through the development of renewable energy sources; the necessary improvement of geolocation systems in public smart city infrastructures to improve safety when driving autonomous vehicles; the development of Industry 4.0 and 5G technology and the feasibility of its application, taking into account the economics, including the costs of producing computerised, vehicle-mounted intelligent control systems for autonomous driving, etc. This raises another research question: How can the synergies of the simultaneous development of the above-mentioned technologies be exploited cost-effectively by interconnecting them with each other and creating final solutions based on the combination of these technologies?
