Recently I extracted pigment from filamentous cyanobacteria, which is purple color during the ammonium sulphate saturation from(35-65%). Normally phycoerythin appears as deep red to pink.
Absorption spectra also showed the peak between 540 -560 nm.
I also attached my phycoerythrinfor verification.
It appears to be little bluish. Please check the presence of phycocyanin.
Well it can appear purple as there are different shades of Phycoerythrin depending upon their shoulder peaks, check their shoulder peaks. May be you can conclude
It is phycoerythrin.....no worries. Sometimes a very concentrated erythrin may look like this. Even if the majority of the pigment is erythrin, cyanin will also be present.
I think it is a mixture of Phycocyanin and phycoerythrin thats why look like this.
Working with phycocyanin extracts, it seems that the volume of the flask and the exposition to light could dramatically influence the color. In this case, with phycocyanin form laggon blue to purple/red. Magy of light properties
Algae have others pigments like Phycocyanin, allophycocyanin also,they are in blue color.
The resulted mixture will appear like purple, pinkish blue, Its shade will be depends on concentration of different phycocbiliprotein
Take UV spectra of the sample....you will find additional peaks at 620nm, if so then phycocyanin is present and that is giving violet colouration
