In 2007, a genetically modified (GM) sugar beet tolerant against glyphosate, a commonly used broad spectrum herbicide, was commercialized in the USA and Canada. The speed of uptake of this technology by farmers has been more rapid than any commercialized GM crop. Sugar beet is a typical European crop and GM sugar beet was first developed in the EU. However, due to the negative public opinion on biotechnology, the European sugar industry never embraced the technology. Instead, the USA was the first to adopt GM sugar beet. Will these experiences ever bring GM sugar beet back to its roots in Europe?
