I'm working with adsorption of organic compounds at materials that are functionalized with different concentration. It was expected that with high functionalization the higher is the adsorption capacity, however the opposite is happening. Any ideias why this happens? Note that there was insignificant surface area change.
Dear Luana, that depends on what kind of functional groups are you adding to the surface of your material. In this case, you may use supramolecular interactions approach to answer your question. Did you measure Pzc? ... All the best!
Dear Luana, i agree with Jose E Arevalo-Fester , functional group present on the adsorbent and adding functional groups affects adsorption capacity of the material and . However on increasing the concentration of loading available site for adsorption will decrease. Even i have found the similar pattern in my research.
It all depends upon the kind or nature of functional groups you are attaching to the given adsorbent and the nature of adsorbate. There is a strong affinity between the adsorbent and adsorbate provided there is some structural parallel between the functional groups of one which adsorbs and one which is adsorbed which in turn will further decide the adsorption capacity apart from other factors like size, shape, geometry, morphology, temperature, etc. You need to ensure beforehand how far the functionalization has taken place before it is used for the said purpose by way of characterization. There is no possibility of decrease in adsorption capacity till deactivation of adsorbent doesn't take place.

I didn't mensure Pzc. I functionalized the material with aromatic compounds and was using the material to adsorve HPA. Also i'm note familiarized with suppramolular interaction approach, I'm gonna that a look on that. Thanks.

The material was characterized, however they have lots of similarities, the only difference between then was the concentration of functional groups.
