It is my understanding that naturally two protons cannot "stick" together even if they are within the strong force reach and beyond (i.e. even smaller distance) and this is possible only if neutrons are present in the mix as an intermediate. Actually, protons are not directly sticking together but stick together with neutron in-between. Since neutrons have only magnetic force and not charge so why then the strong force cannot be assumed to be a very short range magnetic force between protons and neutrons?
