I have been focusing on the electrochemical oxidation reaction of Biomass like 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. I find that many researchers in this field use the alkaline solution as an electrolyte. I follow the same electrochemical condition but I find that if 5-hydroxymethylfurfural(HMF) in the alkaline solution for a long time, the solution will turn red even dark red from colorless gradually. So I was wondering if there is some other reaction of HMF except the oxidation reactions. But I have not found any result or any reaction of HMF in alkaline solution which the product is red in alkaline solution. Besides, the color of HMF in acid solution is still colorless for a long time. So, it seems that HMF is different in acid and alkaline solutions. It will be really helpful for me if anyone could tell me the reason for this phenomenon and it will be better if anyone could afford any articles or researches mentioned this question.~
