Organic farming is widely appreciated and is also acclaimed as healthy and environmentally safe and sound.Governments have also been encouraging and providing incentives. But why the area under organic farming is not increasing?
FiBL made a survey of organic agriculture in 2014.Based on data from 164 countries, currently 0.9 percent of the agricultural land of the countries covered by the survey is organic .Nearly 80 per cent of the area under organic farming is in Oceania(32%),Europe(30)% and Latin America( 8%).Three other regions cover almost rest of the 20% area( North America 8%,Asia 9% and Africa 3).In India the area under organic agriculture is 0.5 million ha( 0.3% area)So I wanted to hear from learned colleagues what are the reasons for not increasing area under organic farming.
Dear colleagues, as per my view the following are the probable reasons for not increasing the area under organic farming.Farmers may have limited organic resources to use in organic farming.Organic produce needs certification which is a costly affair. Some what low yields compared to conventional agriculture and limited opportunities for exporting and getting attractive price are other reasons.
