In my opinion, the mentioned photographs may provide the comfort or active communication in RG.

However, the photographs are not essential matters of RG.

Only the continuous contributions are vitally important for Sustainable Communications of us in RG.

Why some RG Researchers choose not to include their photographs so that we could connect more comfortably?

These can be possible reasons which are not exhaustive list:

I think there may be different opinions between the Ladies & Gentlemen regarding their photographs.

However, everybody prefer the smile photograph like mine.

Interesting answers indeed. Aung and Waldemar - you guyz are both cute and handsome too ;)  And I am like you too at times, Lilliana - changing photos all the time for refreshing sake.

Aung, sustainable contributions are fine but  I would not know you, with or without your smiles if there is no photo to identify your good self.

Yes Ping Fung, true indeed. There are many reasons why RG researchers remain anonymous - obviously for low profile and not because they are ugly - Waldemar, they are still human being.

It is not so much about being nice, beautiful or ugly - those are very subjective. But my concern is if it is for self-protection against loan sharks or misappropriation, is it not more obvious if you do not include your photo that people could do more harm than good? Unless you attach your personal passport or identification number, it is never easier to be abused.

At least those who affix their photos would know that they are not the ones being mishandled. Without one makes it easier for others to just plant one and be gone with it. Just like an unsigned and faceless credit card. Anyone who find that card can just sign over it and spend considerably before they get caught or left scot-free.

RG is a closed scientific community. We pride ourselves in knowing that we have a face as a friend, colleague, partners, researchers all roll into one. Sooner or later, we are bound to bump on each other especially when we move about worldwide to present our papers, journals, publications and all.

Still, there will be journalists who will take our picture and affix it to their newspapers or internet, is it not safer to be identified here first than to be known later - the risks does not diminish either but amplified further owing to its mass communication channel. Whereas RG community is just "us" and we need to "talk" to each other knowing that he/she is not a robot as in captcha input.

Still, I do believe, what is greatly your contributions, they have to be recognised with a face - no matter how old, ugly or non-smiley you are. Recognitions and rewards are most appropriate especially for those sleepless nights just to produce one article, journal, publication just so to be approved and publish in "little" local or  mega journals.

The concern is affiliation for good job done because all those publications are for us and for the medical fraternity if not mass public. And what more satisfying it is then to be recognised by fellow RG before the world "gets" us. That is the reason as to why RG exists today, I believe, so that the scientific community could get together beyond politics, war, evil and all in the name of science.

Then again, there are many reasons to the anonymity. I respect your decisions, whatever they are though personally I feel, intangible rewards such as read publications are the most satisfying moment especially when you know that someone know you and we are in the only scientific community in this whole world !

By the way, regarding my photo, it was taken after the lunch time of one Workshop. That's why I was a little bit sleepy in it.

However, I don't know you are sleepy or not because of wearing Ray Ban sunglasses.

Good evening,

I do not zoom your photo or others for that matter. I take it you are enjoying yourself despite your sleepiness. It is good to assume that people are good than otherwise = positive psychology.

As for me, the photo was taken during one afternoon at a remote river area at Sydney, hence the Ray Ban sunglasses. It was a great reprieve after having a bilateral shoulder operation. I love the scene greatly, furthermore it was winter time, a season that I could never find in my beloved country Singapore.
