Sulfonated crosslinked polystyrene-exhibits lower thermal stabililty profiles than the parent one.
My question is why the sulfonation causes the fast reaching to the onset of degradation, hence the lower thermal stability.

so3h degradation is complex but general consensus is that it involves two steps: first is dehydration followed by decomposition of sulfonic acid moieties which releases of SO2 gas. Both these processes occur at relatively low temperatures.
