I am studying the effectiveness of shear walls as seismic retrofitting technique.
I modeled two 21 story frames, first one without shear walls, and the second with shear walls.
After carrying out TH analysis the results showed displacement increased after installing the shear walls.
It does not make sense. Any help please?

I have a short question, the shear wall model is based on the frame one? or you made 2 models completely different?

I modeled the first frame then I did copy the files to other folder and then added the shear walls. So all other parameters are the same.
It's weird that a shear wall structure has more displacements than a frame-based structure, I'm going to enumerate some ideas I had.
1- look at the properties of the frame, maybe you had put some over-rigid elements (overall joints beam-column).
2- make sure that walls are continuous and the model is not considering any span as a wall, also that the main walls are considering from base to story 21 as one.
3- the only way I think for the shear wall could have more displacement is weight, look at the differences in rigidity and weight with the frame based.

In the 3D model, if the distribution of the shear wall is irregular, maybe distance between the mass center and the center of rigidity increased, so that the building rotates in the plan. i.e. some points at the corners of the plan have more displacement.
While, in the first case for building without shear walls, the displacement could be almost equal at the corners (no rotation of the building).
