Prebreeding has become quintessential in the present world of breeders. The improved lines have either been utilised to full extent or exhausted due to non conservation of the germplasm. Morphological diversity is to be used for developing mitigating new challenges.

Pre-breeding refers to all activities intended to decipher the desirable characteristics and genes/transcripts from unadapted materials that cannot be used directly in breeding programs and to further transfer these particular traits to an intermediate set of plants materials that breeders can use further in producing new plant varieties/cultivars for the benefit of farmers. Pre-breeding offers a unique prospect through the introgression of desirable genes/transcripts from wild germplasm to cultivated plant species. Progress in plant breeding programs is limited due to lack of genetic variability. Thus pre-breeding turn out to be compulsory for all plant breeding-related research strategies. There are many challenges are also associated with the pre-breeding programs such as inter-species cross incompatibility is the main factor that restricts the use of different plant species in transferring trait-responsive genes/transcripts and linkage drag-separating advantageous genes is quite tedious and time-consuming.
