See in general. Students those are the verge of career are not reading books of syllabi even. This is general trend in India; exception there may be.

1. It depends on what kind of leaders. Street gang leaders probably they don't read a lot.

2. Reading habit should be cultivated starting from childhood. I have seen a lot of reading programs for kids here in the libraries. They encourage children to read and also get their parents involved. The programs even give some 'rewards' to the kids if they read certain number of books during a period of time.

Reading encourages our brains to try to relate with the characters we are reading about. Even if we go several days without coming back to the book, our brain continues to make neural connections with the experiences and behaviors of these characters. By connecting with several characters of a book, we boost our emotional IQ and become more able to connect with people. Passion for reading books is very important.

At the same time, we need to know this: to be a good leader, reading a lot might not be enough. Valuable experiences are also very important. For example, a leading plant breeder is not because of he/she read a lot of breeding books, but instead they go to field, prepare soil, plant seeds, manage plants, record the findings, analyze the data and eventually transform all these results into his/her own knowledge. This 'valuable knowledge' is one part of the reasons he/she become a leader.

I'm not sure that simply reading favours the good politic leadership. I would like to believe that this is so, but... Maybe I have not noticed it, but usually the political leaders I have met are deeply ignorant and, conversely, people who have read a lot have been ignored or even despised by the society. I do not believe that reading a lot is a guarantee of intelligence, equanimity, moderation, sensitivity or tolerance. Something very different are the cultured readers that the society recognizes like leaders, without needing to occupy political positions.

Why People Who Read a Lot Are More Likely to Be Good Leaders?

Depends on what kind of books they read. Reading some books can really destroy a person's life. Especially those so-called 'radical books' or 'dark' books. For example, books encouraging people to do negative things.

Those who know the ocean and its behaviors are good sailors and those who know more about society, and social dynamics, politics and political  power and economy and economical theory through reading and retaining the learnt, i.e. versatile knowledge, are likely to be  good leaders. Those with all those versatile knowledge and wisdom will be greater leaders. 

The people who read more has  more knowledge and more thinking ability,can take good decision ,people who read more have more content, the more you read the more you can think creative, the more you can handle situations, people who read more can  see all perspective of a thing, they can visualize more better than other people, but it also depends on what kind of books they read,best example from history THE GREAT CHANAKYA  , he is known for politics and  diplomacy.
