My sample is as-synthesized YAG:Ce phosphors, run under Nitrogen gas at 30ml/min. Temperature range is 20-950 °C. The curve shows a slight weight gain above 650 °C (see Fig. below). Is that it producing a new compound during the analysis? How can I interpret this gain? Thank you so much.
The most possible reaction is the oxidation of the surface material with the gaseous contaminants (mostly Oxygen) within the purge gas. For a reliable decontamination practice purify the purge gas by the use of multiple traps containing drying agent (Silica gel and CaCl2, an oxidizable species like some chromium compound in aqueous solution before letting the purge gas to fill the atmosphere of the TG pan.
Or change the purge gas to helium or argon.

The reason mentioned by Zia Ullah Khan Khan is more probably. I agree with this reason. To test this reason, you could try the measurement with a starting point of 5 C if your instrument works below the room temperature. This reason will be accepted if you get the same gain weight with the shifting in the maximum gain towards the low temperature.
