Magnet characteristics are because the very fundamental particle which make-up all mass is a magnet. So, the proton is a ball of magnets that produce a inverse distance cube attraction, magnetic field evolves with distance to become gravity (This unites the 4 forces as variations of magnetics characteristics, Electrons are held by photons to their distances from the nucleus (is why when electrons change energy level a photon is emitted and it avoids problems the current models of "orbits" have).
